Assessment: Is Your Employee Challenging Your Intellect or Your Authority?

Please answer the following set of questions to determine whether your employee's behavior is indicative of challenging your intellect or challenging your authority.

  1. When your employee asks questions during discussions or meetings, how would you describe their tone?

    • A) Curious and respectful

    • B) Confrontational and dismissive

  2. How does your employee respond to feedback or suggestions you provide?

    • A) Accepts feedback positively and considers alternative viewpoints

    • B) Becomes defensive or argumentative when feedback is given

  3. In what manner does your employee approach disagreements or differing opinions?

    • A) Engages in constructive dialogue and seeks common ground

    • B) Asserts their own perspective without considering alternatives

  4. When your employee follows up on previous discussions, what is their usual approach?

    • A) Shares new insights or information to contribute to the conversation

    • B) Shows disregard for past conversations or decisions made

  5. How does your employee interact with you during one-on-one conversations or interactions?

    • A) Maintains open body language and listens attentively

    • B) Displays closed-off body language and appears disengaged or hostile

Based on your responses, you can determine whether your employee is primarily challenging your intellect or your authority:

  • If you answered mostly A's: It's likely that your employee is challenging your intellect. They may be genuinely interested in understanding and contributing to discussions, seeking clarification, and exploring different perspectives. This behavior can foster a healthy intellectual environment and encourage innovation within your team.

  • If you answered mostly B's: It's possible that your employee is challenging your authority. They may exhibit confrontational behavior, dismiss feedback or suggestions, and prioritize their own opinions over collaboration. This behavior could indicate a lack of respect for managerial authority and may require addressing to maintain a productive work environment.

It's important to note that there are nuances to these conversations. While challenging authority can sometimes be perceived as insubordination, there may be instances where it leads to positive change or growth within the team. Conversely, challenging someone's intellect, even if well-intended, can occasionally foster distrust if not communicated effectively. As a manager, it's essential to navigate these dynamics with sensitivity and address any underlying issues constructively.
